Beware the booze

I came across this little piece detailing the issues facing the fine folks of Kansas. It seems what is good enough for the goose is not so much for the gander:
"While Sunday liquor sales won approval in suburban Kansas City, the southwest Kansas town of Satanta remained one of only a few in the state that still prohibit the sale of packaged liquor."
What the hell is wrong with these people? I defer to an oft used quote - "Beer is proof that God loves us and he wants us to be happy". Most people know this quote but for the folks of Satanta, that was Mr. Franklin. The same dude that discovered electricity, helped found this country, and was a B.M.F besides. Lessen you count all his lady friends. Anyway, back to the poop:
"Opponents have raised concerns about alcoholism. But proponents say Sunday liquor sales allow the communities to better compete with Missouri, where not only liquor stores but also grocery stores, convenience stores and discounters such as Wal-Mart can sell liquor."
I'm not sure that 'compete' is the appropriate word here. Is the 'Kentucky Fried Texaco' really going to have the buying leverage that Wal-Mart enjoys? And Wal-Mart is selling the 'Old Number 7"? This is the same company that refused to sell the Black Crowes album 'Amorica' among many others on the basis that it was offensive or not family oriented or whatever. News flash to Wal-Mart: 'Amorica', along with every other album they wrote came about through a steady diet of Jack Daniels. Furthermore, the implication (said or not) is that the city/county will benefit from the extra tax revenue generated by the 'liquor heads'. How about this? Let me drink because it is arguably one of the most natural things in the world, not because you can profit from it. Of course, this isn't really a problem for me seeing as I don't live in Kansas, I live in Georgia. Here it's just illegal on Sunday. God wouldn't want you drinking on Sunday unless you're taking communion, then it's okay.
"Supporters had said the proposed change would have kept revenue from draining out of the county. But opponents, including church leaders and the Haskell County sheriff, said alcohol hurts families."
'Alcohol hurts families'???? In lieu of previous comments, I'll leave this alone.

I thought alcohol hurt your liver. Wife and child abuse hurt families.

The old tax gimmick only worked in KC but in Satanta you can't buy off Satan with a little tax dollars. But I have long hated the tax rationale for wine/liquor/beer sales. Do we have a right to drink alcohol or not? If so, then why not grant us rights instead of additional tax revenues.

Walmart sells liquor in Kansas? I suppose it is only cheap liquor from China.

Keep up the good work - Turn the Screw is great!!
